Hobart Muir Smith (1912-) was born on September 26, 1912, in Stanwood, Iowa. He attended Kansas State University, studying entomology, and Kansas University for his masters on Amphibians. After earning his Ph.D. in lizards (genus Sceloporus), he completed post-doctoral work at University of Michigan on "biogeographic summary of the snakes of North America."
